The Eye(lids) Have It!

Kdrama friends, we’re now 60 posts into publishing, so forgive me if we’ve already talked about eyelids and I don’t remember. Many Korean actresses, and even some Korean actors, undergo Asian blepharoplasty, also called Asian Double Eyelid surgery. This creates an eyelid crease that results in a larger eye. It’s so prevalent that it’s unusual to see a Korean actress who hasn’t had this done. It’s even more unusual to see a Korean actor who has had this done, but they do exist! The actress who comes to mind who has NOT had this is Kim Go Eun. I watched her in the kdrama “Tune in For Love”, a charming rom com. As I looked at her, I kept noticing she looked “different”. Actually it was refreshing in a way.

So why am I going on and on about this procedure? It’s because I just had blepharoplasty myself, and I want to let you know it’s not for sissies. I had it done because I failed a field of vision test because my eyelids had slowly covered my eyes and made it difficult to see. Yes, kdrama buddies, this is what you can get when you’re a grandma! I bet you’re all looking forward to it, right?

Well, DON’T! I look like someone got physical with me, and I don’t mean the way Olivia Newton John sings in her trademark song, “Let’s Get Physical”. I’d share a picture here but we need all the followers we have, and I don’t want anyone to be offended by my appearance. Yep, it’s pretty ugly over here. My daily routine consists of icing my eyes three times a day, applying antibiotic cream, and sleeping on my back. So far I haven’t mastered that. There is no swimming for a month, and I can’t bend down so my head is near the floor. (But now that I’m thinking, why would I ever want to do that anyway?)

Of course I’m very fortunate to have the means to get this surgery, and I promise to show you the new, improved version when everything heals up. If this is what those gorgeous Korean actresses go through, then more power to them!

I'm familiar with this eyelid-raising procedure. Although I haven't had it myself, I have seen the double black (then yellow) bruises that follow. After you heal, you will look ten years younger. I'm jealous!
