One of the most remarkable things we Kdrama fans have noticed is how Koreans express interest or affection to one another. Unlike Americans who might reach out to a 'love interest' and give them a hug or embrace them, Koreans are much more formal. Typically after we, the audience, has picked up on the 'sparks' it will be a slow burn for several episodes until finally the man or woman looks to the other and states, rather formally, "I like you." Apparently those 3 words are the prelude to everything else that could come later! They would never think of moving to the next step - like arm around a shoulder, or hand holding - until there is this formal declaration of interest. The 'recipient' typically pauses, thinks for a few minutes, and usually does not respond. It appears that they are processing this useful nugget for later.
It's almost like they're trying to be super honest and upfront with each other. It wouldn't be terribly unusual for the person stating "I Like You" to also say, "You don't need to do anything; I just wanted you to know." Mind you I'm not sure most Americans give this process any thought; rather they slide into relationships without acknowledging any feelings and then slide right out of the relationships! It's much more methodical in Kdramas.
And we can't wait to hear our latest star say those 3 little words.
So True Laura..... they seem so honest with their feelings; no games!
I love the simplicity and innocence of the “I like you.”
It’s so refreshing to watch this kind of romance compared to US tv shows. Nothing is left to the imagination in US shows. But with KDramas, you can watch them with your grandkids. No “R” ratings. I love this about KDramas.
Very interesting commentary
