Never in my life have I considered peeling an apple with a knife... or with a peeler for that matter! It's true, I just go ahead and eat the skin since it has all the nutrients. Well, dear readers, in Korea that is simply not done. They meticulously peel their apples & serve them to each other with tiny forks. Not sure if this makes Americans more crass or Koreans fussier but if you watch Kdramas you'll notice this!
Another interesting difference is sweet potatoes. These treats are featured as street food or snack food...roasted in the skin & eaten with your fingers. However, like apples, Koreans will carefully peel back the outside layer and only eat the inside of the potato. So different than here in the States! ~ Judy
UPDATE: Pat spent the weekend visiting and forced me to actually peel an apple. Since I've seen it done so many times in Kdramas I was a pro!
Peeling apples became famous in the movie, SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE. Anyone watch Meg Ryan peel an apple in one continuous piece?
I had one of those delicious sweet potatoes in Korea. Friend Cindy said 7-11 had them , and that’s where I went. I gobbled it down, skin and all. Yummo.
Who knew there was such variability in apple eating! I'm giggling that our Guest didn't know you could eat the sweet potato skins.... I actually find them kind of yummy. And I have NOT tried Korean Mochi Sweet Potato Bread; I'll add it to my list since it sounds on the sweet side!
I eat both of them both ways, depending on how pulp-y the skins are.
Oh how fun to have Pat there! Anyway thats how I eat apple too (my mom would peel them for me and the skin would end up in one long spiral, lucky for her its not my fave fruit) but i dont do it for my american kids lol… as for sweet potatoes, i didnt know u could eat it with skin on! Anyhow have you tried the viral korean mochi sweet potato bread?
