My friend in Korea had to help me with this post. Pat and I have noticed that in almost every Kdrama that features a home (not an apartment) there are platforms in the yards that are used for all sorts of activities. I haven't noticed any lawn chairs or outdoor furniture... only these platforms. And they're called pyeongsang! The appear to be about 6'x6'x2' - ample room for several people to sit on at the same time - and are perfect for just about everything.
In Reply 1988 the pyeongsang is in the alley and all the women gather on it to gossip. Frequently you'll see someone doing something with bean sprouts (this neophyte doesn't know anything about bean sprouts so I cannot guess what they're doing...) Oftentimes you'll notice friends sharing a beer and relaxing on the Pyeongsang at the end of the day.
Do any Americans have pyeongsang in their yards? Perhaps we're missing out! ~ Judy
Pyeongsang as seen in Sam-dal-ri. In this case getting ready for food prep.
The pyeongsang pictured reminds me of the low tables in Kdramas that serve as dining tables. My knees hurt when I see people sitting so low on floor pillows!
