Old Guys

Okay, you know we're old. We weren't child brides, so our grandchildren arrived while we were in our 60's. And we are eternally grateful for them, because if we didn't have them, there would be no Kdrama Gmamas!

Once again, I'm off subject, but I haven't strayed too far this time. This post is about old guys, the male actors in the Kdramas we've been watching. No, there is no swooning going on about them. They certainly haven't taken the place of our swoon worthy heartthrobs, but they do make one think about how...err..."engaging" they are.

(You know, I have no idea if Judy even cares about these old guys, so I am going to have to go it alone this time.) Kim Chang-wan has been featured in three Kdramas I've watched

and liked: "Something in the Rain", "One Spring Night", and "It's Okay to not be Okay". In the last one, he plays a quirky psychiatrist, and his empathy, his playfulness, and his sense of duty makes him shine. I guess I better say it now: I'd be happy to meet him one day, although it would definitely be an older woman and younger man scenario with his 68 to my 75.

Another old guy to watch, and I did just that in "Navillera", is Park In-Hwan. He plays a 70 something who wants to learn how to dance classical ballet, something he loved as a child but was never allowed to do. His struggles with his body, his mind, and his family's acceptance is poignant and real. Fortunately he's older than I am, so this might now make him uncomfortable to meet me, although he might be interested in a much younger woman.

SIGH. ~Pat

Actually I'm in total agreement here with Pat. I especially liked Kim Chang-wan as the psychiatrist; an unusual character and he totally nailed it. That being said, I am still shocked and amazed that these old guys are actually my contemporaries! Remember, I view everything with 24 year old eyes...Surely I cannot be old. ~Judy

When I’m watching my KDramas, I have a hard time identifying with the older characters. Those old folks can’t be me! I’m not that old! But then I realize that I am 68 and I am one of the old folks. That bothers me for a bit, but then I keep watching and I just enjoy the feeling of being young again and think to myself, “You’re not that old.”
