Pat and I have been successful getting a few of you to watch Kdramas and some are clamoring for suggestions. Here are some shows that we've seen with our comments. Pick what you would like!
’Mr Sunshine‘ and ‘Crash Landing on You’ are our top favorites. (You know what we’re talking about here. Could you pick between your kids for a top favorite? Don’t answer that.) These are the minimum requirements for Kdramas in our humble opinions. ‘Mr Sunshine‘ may have too much violence for some of you; ‘CLOY’ is funny and heartfelt.
’Extraordinary Attorney Woo‘ is a fan favorite. We’d call it our third favorite after ‘Mr. Sunshine‘ and ‘CLOY.’ If you have three kids, you’ll get what we mean.) Lead Actress won Grand Prize for the Baeksang (Korean Academy Awards).... and deservedly so. Quirky story about a lawyer who is on the autism spectrum. Second season is allegedly in the works.
’Something in the Rain.’ Excellent rom-com with one of our favorite leading actors. Plus a glimpse into the underbelly of Korean family pressures.
’Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha,’ ‘Our Blues,’ ‘Start-Up,’ ‘25/21,’ and ‘Our Beloved Summer’.... all of these are great options for the rom-com enthusiasts out there. All of them have varying levels of poignancy and laughter. Solid choices one and all!
’The Wind Blows,’ ’39,’ ‘Misaeng-an Incomplete Life,’ ‘DP,‘ ‘The Glory,’ and ‘Snow Drop.’ These probably shouldn't be lumped together as they are so diverse. Some are rather grim, some incredibly sad, and some are heartfelt. Some amazing acting in this batch.
Here‘s a True Confession: ’Snow Drop‘ was a long, long slog, but both Judy and I liked it because the lead actor is one of our favorites. It’s interesting what one will put up with for a favorite heart throb, right?
’Navillera’ and ‘It's Okay to Not be Okay‘ especially feature 'senior' actors which we enjoyed.
Joseon period shows included ‘The King's Affection,’ ‘100 Days My Prince,’ ‘Mr Queen,’ and ‘Under the Queen’s Umbrella.’ (Pat didn't like it; I did) How can you not like those outfits!
Other Suggestions from Judy include:
‘Hospital Playlist’ (2 seasons!)
‘Descendants of the Sun’
‘Romance is a Bonus Book‘ (give me a break.... it features a bit of the printing industry!)
Pat's list includes:
‘Vincenzo‘ (total gangster show that was a bit much for Judy!)
‘Hymn of Death‘ (double suicide loosely based on a true story)
‘The Interest of Love‘ (this stars one of Judy’s favorite actors, but she wasn’t crazy about the ending)
‘My Liberation Notes.’ Again, this is one we split on. Everyone in it is beyond quirky, but it tells an excellent story about (sort of) normal people leading dull, everyday lives.
I’m seeing my choices, and I realize Judy's the optimist of this blog, and I’m the pessimist! I love a good hand holding, once or twice hug, and the one time kiss as much as Judy, but then I want a little ”sturm und drang” along with it…aka emotional stress. And here is the best part of all: so many more kdramas to watch! Let’s get to it!
Love all of your picks. There are some I haven’t seen and will put on my list.
Here’s two more that I really enjoyed: Reply 1988 (I know Pat didn’t care for it, but I really enjoyed it) and Boys Over Flowers. This one is so over the top - but just go with it and you’ll be hooked.
Too much fun!
