I recently watched two movies; Concrete Utopia and Road to Boston. Both are Korean language films that have been getting strong reviews. (Of the two movies I strongly preferred Road; Concrete was too negative.) But this blog isn't about the content it's about a huge structural difference between Kdramas and movies.
Kdramas typically last 16 episodes of 1 hour each. Movies are generally about 2 hours long. Well, surprise, surprise I strongly prefer the longer format. it's a chance to get to know the
Im Si-wan in The Road to Boston; he's definitely a favorite even if I prefer Kdrama format!
characters at a much deeper level, to have complex story lines that can evolve over time, and it simply draws me in so much more than a movie. I'll probably watch the occasional movie (especially if it has some of my favorite Korean actors) but give me a Kdrama any day! ~ Judy
Pat here: what Judy is really trying to say is that she likes the slow burn to the one or two “connections” that the actors finally make in Kdramas. It’s so much more meaningful when it takes 9-10 episodes and that many hours as well. And guess what? I couldn’t agree with her more! Kidding aside, I feel I get to know, understand, and appreciate the story line so much better in Kdramas. I haven’t watched Road to Boston, and I quit watching Concrete Utopia. It was just a bridge too far to watch Lee Byung hun of Mr. Sunshine… well, I’m not going to tell you what he did. You’ll have to check it out yourself!
Judy, did you watch a drama "Misaeng: Incomplete Life" ?
I love this drama, It has 20 episodes.
This is the work that established Im Si-wan as an actor.
I like watching the series better than the movies. With the series, I can think about my drama during the day and anticipate watching it at night. I also like the complex character development and intricate story lines. And the slow burning romance is such fun too!
