Pat here. We know when our blog is being read when our readers suggest we do a post on something. Laura, one of our favorite followers, suggested we do a post on Hwatu, the Korean cards used in Korean card games. Go, Laura! (I’d like to point out that it took me years to tell the two black suits in American cards apart, so it’s a stretch for me to be doing this post.)
In attempting to write something about HWATU and sound like I knew what I was talking about, I went to my favorite resource, Wikipedia. Wiki described the game in such minute
Sample Hwatu cards; if you were Korean you might know what the mean. The Gmamas do not.
detail that I gave up. Hwatu is also called Go-Stop or Korean Flower Cards, and the cards are eye catching. What is unique about them is the size. They are a mere 1 3/8” x 2 1/8”, in other words, they are tiny!
It would be so fun to get some Kdrama lovers together and try to learn this game. Anyone?
Also, if anyone remembers what Kdramas they watched where Hwatu was being played, LMK.
You frequently see Hwatu games in Kdramas and the players are very animated when they slam down these miniature playing cards. Maybe we could organize Hwatu tournaments around the world with Gmama fans. Wonder if we could write this off our taxes? ~ Judy
The internet says Hwatu is just like Japanese card game Hanafuda, which I played as a kid. It's a fun, matching patterns game and not hard to learn.
Ahhh Queen of Tears introduced us to a new game, didn't it? I noticed that too Sally. Kind of like chess but I'm not sure what it is. So now we're familiar with Go, Hwatu, & this new one. Perhaps Song, in Korea can explain for us?
And yes, we'd have to learn to sit on the floor for extended periods of time... Yikes!
I’m up to playing Hwatu. Just not sure I could sit crossed legged on the floor with my bad knees!
What is the game they play with the bigger polished flat round pieces, like in Queen of Tears??
