Dreamland...an original screenplay

Judy Here.  Despite our haranguing, Pat and I realize that many of our Gmamas have not, in fact, watched any Kdramas.  In an effort to educate I have authored my very own Screenplay that is reminiscent of many of these shows. After reading I'm sure you will become an ardent Kdrama Fan just like us...

Disclaimer:  This is a work of fiction and does not represent any real people or events. One of the Gmamas is particularly concerned that this screen play may make us look shallow to our followers. Really? She doesn't remember how we've bared our souls in the past? How could this marvelous work of fiction reflect negatively on us?

DreamLand

An original Screenplay by Judy

Our Leading Lady is working as a mid-level cog in her father’s huge company; no one knows she is related to the owner.  In the coffee lounge - while filling her cup halfway with instant coffee - She inadvertently trips over Gorgeous Man.  She falls backwards in slow motion and Gorgeous Man conveniently catches her.  Time is suspended as they gaze into one another’s eyes for three minutes.

While spending an inordinate amount of time in elevators they gradually get to know each other… without ever speaking.  Furtive glances, passing in the hallways, and fingers brushing are the totality of their relationship at this point.

At a company dinner, the boss behaves lecherously to her and Gorgeous Man chivalrously interjects himself to protect her.  At the end of the meal, after everyone else has departed, Gorgeous Man grabs her wrist from behind and pulls her to him.  They stare into each other’s eyes for three minutes.

“I like you.”  Gorgeous Man says.

That night she staggers home & collapses into a squat on the floor overcome with emotions.  Later, tossing and turning, she decides to text him.   She composes five separate messages and erases each one before tossing the phone on her bed in frustration. Miraculously her phone never needs charging.

Meanwhile Gorgeous Man’s best friend (Equally Gorgeous) works at the same company.   He has tamped down his interest in our Leading Lady since Gorgeous Man has first dibs but is struggling watching their relationship blossom. Being a stand-up guy, he swallows his emotions and is supportive of them during mini crises, of which there are many.  Is Equally Gorgeous doomed to remain single forever?

One day Gorgeous Man finds a bag filled with bank deposit books - each with many thousands of wons noted.  He diligently locates the owner who is of grandmotherly age, and personally returns all the bank books to her home.   Naturally she immediately fixes him a meal that includes a whole chicken, soup, and dozens of side dishes; then she watches him eat. Like all Koreans he is enthusiastic about the meal and it’s clear that Korean Grandma is a fan.

Our Leading Lady and Gorgeous Man continue to get to know one another but recognize that her family may object to their relationship.  Since he’s not from a rich family it could be a disaster!  The dreaded day arrives and the couple drops by her family home for a brief visit.  Her younger brother is getting slapped about the head by their mother as they arrive.  Mom and Dad believe that Gorgeous Man is simply a co-worker and thus welcome him politely.  Will the parents discover their intense love?  Will they overcome societal pressures and welcome him into the family?

As they depart her Parents’ home our Leading Lady slips on the walkway. Gorgeous Man drives her to the hospital so she can be attended to properly.  She is comatose for 2 days while recovering from this minor fall.  Lucky for her, she regains consciousness and Gorgeous Man takes her to his apartment to recover.  It’s on the rooftop level of a shabby building up a very steep hill and accessible only by many flights of stairs.  But he manages to get her there via piggyback and gently places her in his bed.  Gorgeous Man kisses her gently on the forehead and then sleeps on the floor next to the bed.

That night Gorgeous Man dreams about a playground incident in 1st Grade.  A classmate held his hand during a particularly frightening game of tag and she seems vaguely familiar.  He remembers how kind the little girl behaved.

Back at work the loutish supervisor is berating Gorgeous Man by kicking him in the shins for his allegedly substandard performance.  At long last our Leading Lady is forced to disclose her identity as heir to the company!  She steps in and protects Gorgeous Man from the abuse; the entire office is abuzz with gossip!  She explains that when she was in primary school, she witnessed a classmate become frightened during playground and she couldn’t stand by and just watch.

As the first snow of the season drifts down outside the office window, Gorgeous Man realizes that his dream classmate was, in fact, her!  Fate has interceded and brought them together again. That evening he asks her about the playground incident and reveals who she saved.  They stare into one another’s eyes for three minutes.

Gorgeous Man, Leading Lady, and Equally Gorgeous go to a street stall for many, many shots of soju and bump into two Americans – a mother and adult daughter duo- who don’t speak Korean but who are fascinating.  Equally Gorgeous can play basketball so he and Daughter have something in common and arrange for a pick-up game the next day.  In fact, they have an immediate connection, and he seems comfortable with the fact that she can outshoot him from the 3-point line.

Meanwhile the American Mother – who also is a grandma- has a blog post that goes viral and Studio Dragon (Korea’s leading TV Production Studio) reaches out and offers her a position as Director of North American Development.  Amazingly, this silver-haired senior will have total control over casting.  She gets to meet young, male actors as part of her job and is set up on many, many blind dates…. all with gorgeous men.

Finally, the Korean Grandma (who lost her bankbooks) invites Gorgeous Man to her home for a family meal to do some matchmaking with her granddaughter.  Since he is currently dating Leading Lady, he is hesitant to comply but his respect for elders overrides his misgivings so he agrees.  When he arrives at her home who is in attendance?  None other than Leading Lady and her judgmental parents!  Grandma proceeds to rave about how wonderful Gorgeous Man is and by the end of the meal Leading Lady’s family is totally won over.

By springtime, when the cherry blossoms are floating to the ground Leading Lady finally gazes into Gorgeous Man’s eyes for three minutes and says…

                  “I like you too.”

Our loving couple finally embrace and climb into bed - in matching pajamas that button up the front - and promptly fall asleep with all the bedroom lights turned on.
