Another post from Judy! I've commented before on gifts that are commonly given in Kdramas. One of the most common gift is vitamins or a red ginseng drink. Whereas in America we might be offended if someone gave us a big bottle of 'youthful elixir' (What? You think I look old?) ... in Korea it is treated as a thoughtful gift.
Well I have learned of another very popular gift especially around the Lunar New Year. And that's Spam. Yep, that staple of 1950's Americana is still going strong in Korea. It was introduced by the American military in the 50's and was an immediate hit. Spam is featued in gimbap, jjigae, and fried rice; there are even YouTube videos featuring Spam and how to cook with it! I'm told that Spam is particularly tasty with white rice so perhaps we should revisit this food product?
