Yes, this Gmama is still capable of watching shows narrated in English! Just finished up the Emmy Award winning series Beef directed by Lee Sung-jin and featuring Steven Yeun & Ali Wong. It was interesting for me to see the similarities and differences this Netflix series had with Kdramas that I have seen.
Firstly it definitely has a greater 'art movie' type vibe than most Kdramas... and the casual use of profanity -and sex- are totally unheard of in Kdramas! (Remember this is an American series featuring Asian characters... not a Korean series.) But some of the things that carry over include the intricate character development and familial responsibilities.... especially if you are
Beef Creator Lee Sung-jin, Ali Wong, & Steven Yeun
the eldest son. Like many Kdramas there was some skipping around in time & the humor shown in Beef can be pretty subtle. (One laugh out loud scene in Beef takes place when the 'thugs' all intently focus on their phones for an Amber Alert...)
And just like most Kdramas the story line can be unusual... 10 episodes all flowing from an incident of road rage. Who would have thought! I recommend Beef to Kdrama fans; give it a try! ~ Judy
Guess I better put it on my list then…
Great series! I've watched it a few times. It really captured Asian American nuances.
