Have we talked about The Elephant in the Room yet? This is an uncomfortable subject but one we think needs to be addressed. It's all the physical violence in KDramas. There are boyfriends smacking around girlfriends. There are mothers handing it to daughters. There are men beating up other guys. There are friends attacking friends. There are school teachers hurting high school students. And the worst one for me: all the hair pulling! This is mostly a female/female endeavor. No, it doesn't make me breath a sigh of relief.
I have to say the one thing I haven't seen yet is much physical violence toward children, and I'm happy for that. Children seem to be universally adored in Korea.
We understand that there are cultural differences between S Korea and here, and we don't want to be Ugly Americans, so we will leave the sermonizing and pontificating out. We're just saying we've noticed it. Have you?
I particularly notice the parents hitting their adult kids and berating them verbally. The hitting appears more like a 'reprimand'; slapping about on the back and shoulders versus extreme punching and bloodied faces..and girlfriends will certainly do this with their boyfriends too. It's kind of a step down from what 'physical abuse' means to me but it's weird to see adults hitting one another on a routine basis. Plus the physical abuse in the workplace is a total shock to me! ~Judy
Could it be that the secret to the wonderful Korean hair be that it was constantly being pulled during their formative years?
